"This has triggered a chord," says Stephen Lewis, when commenting on the fact that more than 150 grandmother support groups have formed in communities across Canada since the launch of the Grandmother-to-Grandmother Campaign in March 2006. "Something is resonating with people deeply and strongly." Together these groups have raised more than $1 million for distribution through the Stephen Lewis Foundation (stephenlewisfoundation.org). The Foundation directs these funds not only to Rose Letwaba's East Bank Clinic but to more than 100 community-level organizations in 14 sub-Saharan African countries. The funds are used to provide African grandmothers with food, housing grants, school fees for their grandchildren, and grief counselling. To find a grandmother support group in your neighbourhood or to launch your own grandmother network, visit stephenlewisfoundation.org/grandmothers.htm.
