Women’s Health Throughout the Ages
Throughout their lives, women face specific health challenges, from puberty to pregnancy to agin.
Honour Thy Mother
May, the month that honours mothers, is my favourite month. Asa mother of four grown children and two grandsons, I take this time not onlyto celebrate my own mom but also to enjoy watching my oldest daughter’smotherhood as well.
Celebrate Success!
December snows draw the year to a close-a time when we reflect on the year’s past events and plan the year ahead. 2003 has been another powerful and interesting year in the health food industry.
Reproductive System
Without the reproductive system, new members of a species could not be produced and the species would become extinct. Although the foundation of reproductive organs exist at birth, it is not until about ten years later that the full functioning of the system is spurred by the endocrine system, and its sudden change in hormone production to begin puberty.
Menstruation, Irregular
Normal menstrual cycles begin near the end of puberty and end with menopause. They allow women to bear children during this time. The menstrual cycle is regulated by several sex hormones, which cause bleeding and ovulation to occur.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the fallopian tubes and ovaries, also known as salpingitis, though it is often used to describe an infection of any of the pelvic organ.
Polyps
Polyps are benign growths that form on mucous membranes. Nasal polyps are common, but they also occur in the lower intestinal tract and uterus. When they first form, these growths are shaped like teardrops, later growing into round, grape-like shapes attached by a stem.
Varicose Veins (see also Leg Ulcer)
Varicose veins are weakened, enlarged blood vessels. They tend to lie just below the skin’s surface on the lower part of the leg, and become obvious as winding blue lines elevating the skin. Varicose veins result from damaged venous valves.
Homeopathy and Fatigue
A midwife called me about our mutual patient, Jane, who had been in labour for many hours with intense contractions. Jane’s energy was flagging. She was trembling and said she couldn’t go on.
Women and Metabolism

Metabolic Inequality Not all weight is created.
Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a condition that describes a range of physical and emotional changes that many mothers experience after having a baby. PPD can range in severity but is often more significant than the common baby blues new moms experience.
Your Breast Friend
When lingerie shopping, most women spend too much time searching for a sexy style instead of the right fit. Unfortunately, a plunging push-up bra is not the healthiest choice; neither is going without a bra at all.
Natural Thyroid Health
If you wake up in the morning complaining that you are as tired as when you went to sleep, if you’ve gained weight you find impossible to lose, if your hair is falling out...
8 Weeks to Vibrant Health
If you are perplexed by PMS or menopausal symptoms, or wondering about HRT versus herbal remedies, 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health will help answer your questions. It’s like an encyclopedia of information regarding women’s health concerns, portrayed in a user-friendly, practical manner.
Doing the Hormone Dance
When you think of hormones, are you thinking about estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone? Complete hormone balance involves other crucial hormones as well, all participating in a delicate dance between sex hormones and thyroid and adrenal hormones.
At the Crossroads
I paid a visit to my gynecologist recently to discuss birth-control options. I was looking for something a little less hormonal (than the pill) and a lot more long-term. I’d decided that one child was all I wanted, and I had that one eleven years ago. It was time for a change.
Postpartum Survival Strategies
In some traditional cultures, women take the first 30 days after the birth of a baby to recover from pregnancy and childbirth and learn how to care for their new baby. However, in many modern cultures women are expected to bounce back and return to managing their jobs and households almost immediately.
Beauty and the Breast
Female breasts—what longings, wishes, desires, and fears do they evoke? Our personal, emotional responses to breasts are woven together with popular culture and media-driven imagery.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Personal Lubricants
If you’ve seen the ads in women’s magazines that promise an end to vaginal dryness and you’ve either quickly flipped the page or paused to read the text surreptitiously, you may be interested to know that there’s an abundance of lubricants to choose from.
